Description
“A Burning Question” or Un question brulante” This wonderful artwork is an antique Chine Colle etching, made by by Wilm Steelink also know as Willem Steelink Junior, a work he made in cooperation with Jan van Essen in 1895. The etching is depicting a young dog, maybe a New Foundlander, looking with a hypnotic gaze at a burning cigar.
This etching is one of 12 limited edition artworks that where published in a portfolio by a group of joined artists under the name of “De Distel:”, (the Thistle). Other artists with artworks in this portfolio where: Geo Poggenbeek, Carel L. Dake, Ferdinand Gustaaf Oldewelt, Jan van Essen, Nicolaas van der Waay, Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller and Ernst Sigismund Witkamp Jr. It was published in Amsterdam under editorial of Tj. van Holkema [en Warendorf]. The etchings of this portfolio are also in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and they are considered rare.
