    Belgian Artists: Charles Theunissen

    Karel Carolus (Charles) Philippus Theunissen, 1871-1948

    Charles Theunissen, was a well known Belgian painter. He grew up in the desolate and sparsely populated area of the Kempic heath fields. He was known for his modest, friendly and withdrawn personality. Charles began to draw in his younger years and he met many professional painters that were out landscape painting in nature. His talent was discovered and when he was sixteen, he went for education to the  “ Koninklijke Academie” in Antwerp to develop his talents.

    His teachers were:  Jan-Willem Rosier, Karel Verlat and Piet van der Ouderaa. After his education he went to live in the town Liege, where he developed into an appreciated and highly valued portrayal artist. Social developments began to play a big role in his work; the industrial revolution, poverty and inequality. Theunissens paintings are highly appreciated in Belgium

    Swedish artists: Valfrid Nelson

    Valfrid Nelson 1849-1930

    VALFRID NELSON born 1849 in Bjuv, Skåne, died 1930 in Helsingborg. He studied in Copenhagen and France.
    Nelson is still a well known and a much sought after painter. He left behind a huge ouvre of paintings and pastel drawings, most of them Swedish landscapes in which water and sky and light played a big role.

    French artists: Louis Marin Bonnet

    Louis Bonnet 1736-1793

    Louis Marin Bonnet came from a family of artisans and was trained in the craft of engraving by his brother-in-law, the engraver Louis Legrand (1723-1808). Via Legrands connections in the art world, Bonnet became the pupil of Jean-Charles François. After a year of study, Bonnet and François invented the “crayon manner”. This was a engraving technique invented to imitate the look of a chalk drawing.  In 1760, Bonnet was ready to set up his own shop. During this period he perfected the crayon manner by producing prints using several different plates, each inked with a different color. These were very valuable and labor intensive processes that where simplified later on.  He also experimented with aquatint-like techniques designed to reproduce wash drawing.

    Bonnet was considered one of the most significant representatives of engraving in the “pastel “manner. Engravings with mythological and gallant scenes, as well as portraits and nudes. He engraved after his friend Francois Boucher, Francois-Hubert Drouais and Jean-Baptiste Huet.
    Works of Louis Marin Bonnet are part of the collections of many  international museums.

    French Artists: Charles L. Lingée

    Charles L. Lingée 1748-1819

    Plate has its full margins

    L’ occupation, Lingee after Freudenberg, This engraving is one out of a suite of several prints, called: “Monument du Costume Physique et Moral de la fin du Dix-huitième siècle”. 
    The series was meant to educate people about the fashion, manners and morals of the wealthy. This one is from the first suite and deals mainly with costume and manners. In the lower left corner it reads: I. H. E. inv. S. Freudenberg del. On the right it reads: Lingee sculp. In the middle there is also an address in Paris and the date: 1774. The plate measures 43 x 29,5 cm. and is printed on laid paper.

    Austrian Artists: Solomon Kleiner

    Solomon Kleiner, 1700-1761 was an Austrian graphical artist.


    The Austrian engraver Salomon Kleiner made this engraving of ‘Lustshloss Favorite’.

    The first engraving is dated between 1723-1726, and called ” Un grand Boulingrain borde des Marroniers”. and in German: “Ein groses Boulingrain mit kastanien baumen belest”. 

    A big bassin shaped garden and border planted with chestnut trees.

    On this nice engraving we see a group of people strolling and enjoying a wonderful, 18th century garden. This garden is probably located in Mainz next to the Rhine river and called ” Lustschloss Favorite” and also just “Favorite”.

    This was the location of a German castle with huge gardens, meant to please the eye and entertain with huge Baroque gardens and water games.The whole complex was build between 1700 and 1730. Luckily, there is a lot of information about this Castle and eventually its destruction so you can enjoy the rich history behind this engraving. A lot of information is also available about the maker, Salomon Kleiner.

    French Artists: Antoine Louis Romanet

    Romanet 1742-1810 after Freudenberg

    This is one of the customs and rituals gravures, Freudenberg, painter and engraver, produced for publisher Francois Prault. These plates where meant to educate the not so rich in the ways, fashion and etiquette of the happy few. The plates where not a big success because Freudenberg had no knowledge of the French high society customs. At one point, (1773) Freudenberg disappeared all together, thus never finishing the series. Some of these plates are finished by others in this case Romanet. The plate measures: 49.5 x 29,5 cm. and is printed on laid paper. Ca. 1770-1780.

    The title of the print is “Anemone des Jardins”. In the upper left corner a number is found, no 37. Series of floral lithographs by Thierriat and lithographer H. Brunet are announced on a regular base from ca. 1800 until 1830 in the Journal général d’annonces des œuvres de musique, gravures …, Volume 1, This book is available as a free e-book, and digitalized by Google.

    A lot is known about Alexandre, who was a well respected and known painter, engraver and teacher. He lived and worked most of his life in Lyon France.     The plate has a paper stamp mark in the lower left corner. Outside the margins there is soiling and some tide lines are visible in the paper. The plate measures 36 x 35,5 centimeters.

    German Artists: Georg Wille

    Johann Georg Wille 1715-1808

    In his life Wille had many students, one of them being Sigmund Freudenberg.

    Georg Wille, born in Germany, moved later on in his life to France where he started his career as a very gifted copper engraver. He became very famous both in France as abroad, almost obtaining the status of a 18th century superstar. He became the house engraver for famous kings like Louis the 15th, Frederick the second and Frederick the Fifth of Denmark. Napoleon Bonaparte appointed him ‘night of the Legion of Honor’. In 1758, Jean was naturalized and became an French citizen.

    He won many prizes and acknowledgements of his whole Ouvre. Because Wille had many contacts in Europe, he left a ton of historical information behind when his correspondence was published after his death and bundled in book. Some historians described him as a “network entrepreneur”.
